Knit Ticking around Latex

How to Build a Mattress with Knit Ticking

PROS
  • Washable
Preshrunk and machine washable. No longer do you have to spot clean the the ticking while it is on the latex.  Freshen your entire mattress by washing this ticking.
  • Flexible
This knit case will flex with your body and the latex as you move. The inherent stretch of knit fabrics lets their looped threads pull apart from each other when pressure is applied.
  • Thinish
While this double knit fabric is actually fairly thick for just one layer of fabric, those we endearingly call “latex purists” like that they can be completely absorbed by the latex with this case. Every pressure point can be entirely soothed through this ticking.
  • Price
Having just one simple layer of fabric, this ticking is very affordable.
CONS
  • Thinish
With its one layer of fabric, it protects the latex from dust and debris, but not from heat sources, sunlight.  It may give the latex a lesser life than the thicker quilted ticking.  To compensate for its thinness, some add a layer or two of wool batting around the latex and under the ticking. The wool batting’s thickness protects the latex and softens the latex’s bounce. Since the wool batting does not come quilted, you save the cost of the quilting and thus maintain the affordability of the knit ticking.
  • Flexibility
As you put consistent pressure sleeping on the latex, you may notice that one slab or another starts to stretch a little farther towards the edges than the others.  The clean lines of your mattress can be renewed by unzipping the ticking and flopping the layer back into place.  A layer or two of wool batting wrapped around the latex will serve as extra strength and slightly prevent this occasional shifting.

Quilted Ticking

How to Build your Mattress with Quilted Ticking
PROS
  • Beauty
With our soft double knit fabric on top, this ticking made for your DIYing will make your mattress feel and look better than your conventional mattresses. The rolling diamond quilted pattern adds a refined look to your mattress.
  • Thickness
Its thickness serves your comfort as well as protection of the latex layers hidden inside. The less exposed to elements like heat, sunlight, and poor air quality, the longer your latex will stay fresh.
  • Wool Layer
This 1″ layer of wool is enough to cool your sleep with its temperature regulating abilities. It is also enough to act as a flame retardant if needed.
  • Simplicity
This is the simplest build with the most components to it.  Zip the ticking shut around the fill and you have a mattress.
CONS
  • Price
This ticking with its two layers of organic cotton fabric and layer of wool has a lot to it, add the cost of quilting the layers together and you have our most expensive ticking.
  • Thickness
Some find the thickness to stiffen the feel of the latex slightly. While not a significant change, those we call “latex purists’ tend to avoid the extra fabric between them and the latex.

Family Bed in a Family sized Bed

As a new mom learning about all the terrible toxins in mattresses, I searched everywhere for a non-toxic alternative. It seemed impossible to find a mattress that wasn’t outrageously expensive and didn’t have some sort of flame retardants or springs that attract EMF’s. When I stumbled across DIYbedding.com, I was amazed!! Building our own custom mattress was so perfect for my husband and I because we like to have a lot of room when we sleep and we were co-sleeping with our 6 month old. Deborah was so helpful while we made our decision about size, thickness, and material. We were able to order a custom bed that is bigger than a king! We absolutely LOVE it! The latex is so supportive, we only needed the 6 inch height! We HIGHLY recommend DIY Bedding to ALL of our friends who are health conscious! We couldn’t be happier with our purchase!

Popular Mechanics August 2015 issue is a DIY issue.  It is full of DIY ideas, including making your own mattress.  An hour long interview and a few emails produced this short summary of some of our options.  As all of our options are customizable, you may find more accurate numbers if you call me for calculations, but the gist is there: You CAN make your own mattress!

How to choose Firmness for Cushions

Posted on 1 Comment
Natural Latex Cushion

These tips are based on the assumption that the primary purpose of the couch will be for sitting on.  If the comfort of the couch is more important for sleeping on, see The Banana Test for determining firmness.

ORGANIC NATURAL LATEX

  1. Choose firmness based on depth first (there are five firmnesses – D65, D75, D80, D85 and D90):
    For BASE CUSHIONS

    1. 3” or less, get a D85 or D90
    2. 4”, aim for a D80 or an D85
    3. 5”- 6”, pick between D80, D85 and D90

    For BACK CUSHIONS

    1. 1-2″, get a D75 or D80
    2. 3-4” or less, get a D65 or D75
    3. 5”- 6” pick between D65 or D75
  2. Choose firmness based on preference of feel second:
    1. Do you like it firm or like a standard couch, rather cushy? The firmer the latex, the more supportive it is and the less you will sink into it.

Rules of Thumb

  1. In base cushions, D80 is considered medium in couches. D85 is considered medium-firm in couch cushions. D90 is considered firm.
  2. In back cushions, D65 is considered soft and D75 considered medium. Depending on the depth, as a pair, a D65 on the and a D80 on the base work well together, as do as D75 on the back and a D85 on the base,
  3. The thinner the latex, the less firm it feels. Depth can make up for the firmness. A 2” D85 will feel the same as a 3” D80. A 3” D90 will feel like a 4” D85.
  4. The heavier you are the deeper latex you will need. Average adult weight (130-230 lbs.) will not feel the supporting wood or spring foundation or on 5 – 6” of latex if the latex is firm, extra firm or hard. A 300 lb adult will want a minimum of 6” of hard latex or deeper of a softer latex.
  5. Cutting the latex ½” to 1“ larger than the cushion dimensions gives a nice full look. The firmer the foam, the less we will add to the dimensions.

Loose Fills

Do your back cushions have a non foam fill like batting or feathers? Consider using

  • wool batting
  • cotton batting
  • shredded latex and kapok mixed
  • woolly bolas

Our wool batting or cotton batting will be a great substitute for the typical dacron batting used. Both are lofty and will be a soft fill. Over time, they do compress in areas of use. They are sold by the 88″ yard. The battings are also great for wrapping around your cushions, more info here.

Our woolly bolas also make a great feather replacement.  They are always soft, a little dense, as light as a standard pillow. They do a really good job keeping their shape and staying in the whole pillow as opposed to some of the loose fills that sink to the bottom of the case because of their weight. They are also not messy!

A mix, often 50/50 of shredded latex and kapok can also make a soft cushion and even bean bag. On its own, shredded latex is squishy and bouncy; kapok is light and airy.  Together the kapok fills in the spaces between the shreds of latex, making the pillow smoother and giving it more volume without increasing its weight significantly. To be fair, both fills are a little messy to work with. More info on comparing all the different loose pillow fills available here.

If you know the dimensions, you can calculate how much you need here.

Shearing Season is Here and so is our Wool!

Spring has come and with it, warming weather and sheep ready to lose their winter coats of wool.  We are in hands on pursuit of great wool for our products this year.

With a need of 3500 lbs. of wool for a run of our own wool blankets, plus more for our wool batting products (toppers, comforters), we have purchased a total of 4765 lbs. of wool.  Do you think it will last us until next Spring?

NOTE: We have sold out of the blankets made from this batch of wool and do not anticipate making more. The blankets are beautiful but the cost was far beyond what we calculated and some of the small businesses we used to complete the project have gone out of business.

We are glad to include in our roundup two farms that we have worked with previously:

Sunbow Farm – Eau Claire, WI

Together Farms – Mondovi, WI

We have also added more shepherds to the list:

Sutton Ridge Farm – Jordan, MN

Silver Valley Farm – West Lafayette, IN

Daylight Family Farm – Evansville, IN

Hunter Dorset – West Lafayette, IN

Kennedy Southdowns – Shirley, Indiana

Ralph Strutz – Arcanum, Ohio

Chad and Callie Leader – Crawfordsville, IN

MP Club Lambs – Wingate, IN

Organic Latex Sofa

We are thrilled with the GOLS organic latex foam that you provided for our sofa reupholstering. It is the most comfortable sofa in the world and hands down the best place ever to take a nap. It was significantly less expensive for us to have our Baker sofa upholstered with your organic latex and organic cotton batting than to purchase a new latex sofa. It’s very hard to find a supplier of GOLS upholstery foam. We are so glad to have found you and know where we will go for our next bed and future upholstery projects.

So Happy With Our Purchase!

I just wanted to say how much we love our latex bed and pillows! We wanted a comfortable, chemical free bed and that’s exactly what we got. Not only that, but we were able to put together a bed and have a removable topper that we can use in our 5th wheel so we can take our comfort on the road! I can’t wait to replace our kids’ beds, and we will definitely be replacing them with latex beds and pillows from DIY Natural Bedding!!

Shredded Latex Couch Pillows

Posted on Leave a comment

While a slab of latex can easily be cut into any shape, the price of shredded latex can be more affordable and in the case of couch pillows, perhaps more practical.  We made for this customer 6 bouncy, overstuffed pillows for his couch. Our GOTS twill is the inner case; they are slipped into an outer case to match the sofa.

“They turned out perfectly.  They have a really substantial feel/look to them and they’ll last a long time.”

Woolly Bolas – New Product!

Posted on Leave a comment

A lot of inquiries have come through lately for woolly bolas, small wool balls. They are lightweight and rather fluffy twisted bits of wool fiber.

They are made fairly simply:

  1. Sheep are pastured and cared for.
  2. Sheep are sheared.
  3. The wool is washed.
  4. The wool is picked by a machine to remove the burs and other stubborn vegetation.
  5. The wool is usually carded, a machine which brushes the fibers into a sheet, untangling their knots and smoothing them out to make batts or rovings or the start of many other wool projects.  However, when the carding machine runs backwards, instead of brushing and layering the fibers into sheets, it twists the fibers into small wool balls commonly dubbed bolas.

We feature woolly bolas both in our Wool category and our Supplies category. They would make great stuffing for a pillow or any craft you need stuffed. Since they are lightweight, you will need only 1/2 as much as you would wool batting.

Why are they named bolas? Bola means ball, in a few different languages. Did anyone else beside thinking of the weapon, think of the spider who makes silk bolas to catch his prey with. I guess those nature radio shows I listened to as a youth did leave some lasting learning.

Safe Snuggling

Posted on Leave a comment

I’m happy to say we LOOOOOOOOOOVE our new mattress :D.  The last piece of latex made it just perfect, it’s not as soft as our tempur-pedic type but it’s way nicer in my opinion and the most important thing is that when my baby crawls over from his co-sleeper he can snuggle next to me without sinking unsafely into the mattress or breathing the nasty fumes!!!

Funny story, we found the mattress noticeably softer without the wool puddle pad so we took it off and are going to use it as a rug underlayment for his rug, since we needed a non-toxic wool one anyway!!!

I’m sure I’ll be back 😀  I have some projects in mind that need some stuffing and now that I’ve found you I’m so happy I have a natural solution for all of them! – C.E. Peoria, IL

Wool Doll’s Pillow and Quilt

Posted on Leave a comment

Using some wool batting leftover from a pillow making, we sewed up a doll’s pillow and a quilt for the doll. We rolled the batting up just like we did for our bed size pillow and sewed it shut.  The quilt was stitched with just one layer of the 3 lb. batts, thin enough to not require any special sewing equipment on my sewing machine. Do I need to say that the fabrics were chosen by my daughter.

How to get Him out of Bed

Posted on Leave a comment

We got the bed together and my son is enjoying his new bed!! The hardest part about how much my son likes his bed is getting him up in the morning 🙂 Just wait until he gets a wool comforter next winter…..it will be worse. He’ll just want to stay in bed.

I am so happy that we found your website back when we got our bed. We are all enjoying a healthy night’s sleep. – S. T.

Pillow Sizes Changed

Posted on Leave a comment

NEW OLD
Standard: 20″ x 26″ Standard: 19″ x 24″
Queen: 20″ x 30″ Queen: 19″ x 28″
King: 20″ x 36″ King: 19″ x 33″

The difference between our previous size and standard sizes is small, only 2-3 inches depending on the pillow label; however, we wanted to give you those extra inches that you might be accustomed to.

Funny thing is shredded latex pillow sizes are not standard, mostly nowhere. Each company has their own standard size, for example here are the first three numbers a web search produced: 17″ x 25″, 16″ x 25″, 18″ x 24″. Despite the industry’s inconsistent variations on latex pillow sizes, since we offer cases alone without fill and since we want your bed setup to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible, we will standardize our sizes to the above numbers.

We still can make any pillow size you like. If you have a pillow of our old size and you would like to purchase a second matching size, let us know and we’ll sew you a new case for no extra charge.

And if you need anything custom project sewed, we’re happy to help.

Super Duper Comfortable

Posted on Leave a comment

I absolutely LOVE my new couch cushions!  They have really brought my 15yo couch back to new. I’m so happy I decided to have these cushions made and not just get cheap foam (again)… Not only will they last waaaay longer but they are super duper comfortable and the perfect firmness and springiness. I didn’t take a picture of the “before” (too embarrassing) but I should send you a picture of my love seat cushions (to be replaced later) next to the couch cushions. Also your wool advice was very helpful. Thank you! – J.C., Massachusetts

Perfection!

Custom Natural Latex Banquette Cushions

I cannot say enough good things about my whole experience dealing with Deborah and the end result of my order. She was very helpful with suggestions and reasonable on pricing. My cushions could not have turned out more perfectly especially since this was all done online! I sent Deborah a sketch with measurements, ordered my fabric and had it sent to her seamstress and in just a few short weeks I had my cushions which fit and feel perfectly! The left over fabric was even sent back so I can use it for something else.

I plan to order pillows and mattresses next!

Custom Natural Latex Couch/Bed

After designing and building her house just right, this customer added one of the last custom touches: a natural latex couch whose cushions can be arranged into a perfectly sized Full size mattress with pillow.

She chose 4″ of Firm Natural Latex, wrapped in wool batting. The pillow is the small back piece in the pictures and is made of a Soft piece of Natural Latex. All of the cases are wrapped in prewashed zippered cases made with our GOTS Organic Twill fabric. The back cushion and the pillow are also wrapped in prewashed zippered cases made from a decorative fabric of the customer’s choosing.

When the cushions are laid side by side in a line, the couch turns into a full sized mattress, perfect for a guest yet tucked away when not needed.
